Ohio Shared Services Collaborative featured in national publication

OSSC ArticleOhio Shared Services Collaborative has been featured in School Bus Fleet magazine, a national publication that has been the voice of the school transportation industry since 1956.

The article, “Collaborative Shares Data, Saves Money,” features the Ohio Shared Services Collaborative, a shared services project charged with discovering opportunities to reduce school transportation costs while improving services for students and teachers.

The cost of the project was covered as part of an Ohio Department of Education Straight A Fund grant awarded in August 2014. The grant committed to reducing transportation costs by reducing bus idling time, improving bus routes, quantifying and monitoring student ridership and sharing services across districts where practical.

“The more efficient we can make those bus routes, the better it is for the school bus, because it’s less wear and tear on the school bus; the better it is for the school district, because they’re saving money; and the better it is for the student riding the bus, because they don’t have as long a bus ride,” David Branch, superintendent of Muskingum Valley ESC, explains.

Currently 20 school districts, one Board of Developmental Disabilities, four Educational Service Centers and two Information Technology Centers are part of the consortium. The group plans to expand to an even larger area of rural Ohio, adding 62 districts and more than 90,000 students in upcoming school years.
